Score one for the bad guys

Armed robbers have stolen art worth $100 million, including works by Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh, from a Zurich museum, police said Monday.
The Zurich police said the robbery took place Sunday. Also among the works stolen were oil paintings by Paul Cezanne and Edgar Degas.
Police called the heist a "spectacular art robbery," but did not identify the museum, saying only that it is in the city's eighth district.
Last week, Swiss police reported that two Pablo Picasso paintings were stolen from a Swiss exhibition near Zurich. The two oil paintings, "Tete de cheval" ("Head of horse") and "Verre et pichet" ("Glass and pitcher"), were on loan from the Sprengel Museum in Hannover, Germany.
Frigg! Works by Monet, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Degas?! *sob*
Great, a spectacular art robbery. I don't want to hear that. How about a spectacular security system that stopped the attempted art robbers in their tracks. Those poor paintings are out there with who knows what sort of riff-raff right now. Wah!!!

NEW YORK, United States (AFP) - The slipping US economy and plunging bourses appeared to infect the market for multi-million dollar paintings, as major works including a Van Gogh went unsold at auctions here this week.
The two major art auction houses, Sotheby's and Christie's, both got a shock in New York as they sought to mark new price records for artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Gaugin, and Van Gogh.

DAMASCUS (Reuters) - French archaeologists have discovered an 11,000-year-old wall painting underground in northern Syria which they believe is the oldest in the world.
The 2 square-meter painting, in red, black and white, was found at the Neolithic settlement of Djade al-Mughara on the Euphrates, northeast of the city of Aleppo, team leader Eric Coqueugniot told Reuters.
"It looks like a modernist painting. Some of those who saw it have likened it to work by (Paul) Klee. Through carbon dating we established it is from around 9,000 B.C.," Coqueugniot said.

Monet painting sold at auction
Jun. 19th, 2007 02:10 amA view of the River Thames painted by Claude Monet sold for almost $36 million at auction Monday, kicking off a week of big-budget sales on the London art market.
"Waterloo Bridge, Temps Couvert" ("Waterloo Bridge, Overcast Weather") was bought by an anonymous American bidder for $35.6 million including buyer's premium during a sale at Christie's auction house.

The price — more than double the work's pre-sale estimate — is the second-highest ever for a Monet at auction. The record of $39.7 million was set at Sotheby's in 1998.
"Waterloo Bridge, Temps Couvert" is one of a series of views of the bridge and river that Monet painted from his room at the Savoy Hotel near the start of the 20th century.
Another Monet, the water lily painting "Les Arceaux de Roses, Givenchy," sold for $17.8 million Monday, just below its pre-sale estimate.
Bobby Read, an expert at art insurer Hiscox, said the sale showed the art market is "going from strength to strength."
"Paintings like the Monets sold at Christie's are few and far between," he said.
Monday's sale of impressionist and modern art begins a week of high-profile auctions by Christie's and its rival, Sotheby's, that experts say could generate almost $1 billion.

Lost Beethoven Manuscript Rediscovered
This piece by Beethoven has been missing for 115 years and was found in a cabinet in a library. I can only imagine how excited the librarian must have been when she realized what she had found.

Stolen Rembrandt recovered
With any luck they will be able to locate the second Renoir painting that the armed robbers took. Daring armed thefts of paintings seem to be happening more and more in European museums. Is it just that their security is so lax that the thieves know they can get away with it?

Lichtenstein painting slashed in Austria
New Painting by Norwegian Painter, Edvard Munch discovered

I'm very curious what made the woman in Austria attack the Lichtenstein painting with a knife and I'm very interested in having a look at this painting that is being tentatively attributed to Munch.

How exciting! A lost Da Vinci could be on the other side of a wall, safe and waiting to be found.

Munch's Stolen Scream
May. 21st, 2005 01:17 amI do so hope that The Scream and the Madonna have not been destroyed. I can only hope that they are out there somewhere and will eventually be recovered and then security can be upped in order to keep them from being taken again. These are iconic images recognized around the world and should be protected and being stolen twice within a decade is pretty pathetic, obviously changes need to be made. Hmmm..I shall be in that part of the world very soon, perhaps for their own protection I should make myself the guardian of certain items. I'm sure that the Van Gogh is terribly unsafe where it is located in Sweden and would be much safer in my house. Yes, clearly that is the solution. It is clear to me now what my mission shall be while in Sweden and Norway. Steal the art and artifacts to ensure that they are preserved. Yesssss...
