RETURN TO OAKLAND ZOO

anam_moonJames and I have been off of work together since he got off work early on Monday and so we got to spend some time together. Today we decided that he should get a chance to share in the wonderful zoo experience. I had to tempt him out of the comfort of bed with the allure of Malayan Sun Bears playing, he knew he didn't want to miss out on that.
We got there perhaps a little before one, had lunch, and then wandered all over the zoo. The river otter, ocelot, and alligator are still inaccessible to the public due to the construction, but I was able to get a much better view of the lions and the bison since we went on the sky ride that travels over their enclosures. I'm still rather disappointed by not getting to see them though, the ocelot is such a beautiful animal. I guess it will just give me more excuse to go back again.
I think James and I ended up spending the most time with the cotton topped Tamarins, they are so very adorable. James and I were able to take some great photos with my digital camera. The chimps were being particularly cute as well, one was looking at a fashion magazine when we came by. After that it was wandering around with a plush monkey on its back like a baby chimp and pulled out a blanket to fluff up in a corner and arrange into a comfy bed to flop over onto. The Gibbon was being particularly active and acrobatic today too.
The Elephants were right out front today and I was able to sit and sketch one. They are one of the more considerate animal models. James was particularly thrilled about seeing the Elephants, it wouldn't be a proper zoo visit without them. I will admit to being particularly thrilled with seeing the Tamarins, but I loved seeing every animal. Seeing the python was very cool, the meerkats were cute as usual, the tortoise was wonderful. I wanted to draw all of them, but all the meshing over the enclosures made it hard for me to see them in detail. I'll just have to seek out better images of them in books or online. There is something about going to the zoo that seems to inspire a childlike enthusiasm in anyone. I know I felt a sense of exuberance and wonder being at the zoo. I also found several gifts for my little cousins that I'm saving for Christmas.
After leaving the zoo at five we headed back to Fremont and went to Market Broiler for dinner. We seem to go there a lot, but it is one of the better places in the area, especially if you are sticking with Fremont. I saw my friend Maria outside of Market Broiler. We parked right next to each other and only noticed each other when I looked over to let the gal parked next to me get out of her car first. She was there only briefly to pick up a cousin visiting from Canada. After dinner James and I headed back to my place and touched bases with B&N veterans about meeting outside of B&N to go out for sushi and watched an episode of "Star Trek TNG." After that James headed home so he could get ready for work tomorrow (today, at this point). Lucky guy gets to work open till close. Ick.
