Two newly described fossil whales---a pregnant female and a male of the same species--reveal how primitive whales gave birth and provide new insights into how whales made the transition from land to sea.

The practice of an aquatic animal hauling itself onto the sand to give birth to a helpless pup is a big risk for mother and baby. I wonder why cetaceans stay in the water now? And how they moved to the process of tail-first birth?
