When we had Donovan this warning was not out there, nor talked about in the parenting classes we went to. He used a sleep positioner and for a few months would not sleep through the night without it. We were very paranoid about suffocation, however, and we started the positioner at his waist so that his torso and head were well clear of it. I probably would have taken it out if he was the type of baby that scoots down when he sleeps, but he would always scoot up when he moved, which was away from the positioner. In the daytime when I was sitting next to him for his naps I would use it to lay him on his side to help round out his head, not that it worked but the doctor kept telling us to. We agreed that we would never leave him unattended while on his side, just to be safe. So for us it was a good thing. I'm sorry for the parents who lost children, I don't even want to imagine that. I'm glad they're making the public more aware of the safety hazards of baby gear.
