The late Stephen Jay Gould, paleontologist, evolutionist, and a dear friend, never tired of debunking the myth that evolution was a march toward anything. There is no "direction" to evolution, and it doesn't "march" (unless you consider an earthquake to be a "march"). Interesting stuff.
