New Flying Fox

Stolen from Jemstone's journal. What an incredible world we live in, all the time there are new discoveries!
The little fella really should have been named after the native guide that spotted him, instead of the island. And why are they assigning credit for the find to the researcher that denied its existence until one was accidentally caught in a net?

I love the cultural arrogance implicit in this story. "Native guide" accurately describes a creature, but the researcher, probably "not native", tells him it can't exist.

Of course, there is an alternate hypothesis, the one underlying Heinlein's novellette Waldo — to wit, that the way we envision something determines its reality. The guide's description caused the creature to spring into being.

Seriously.
"Haha! Stupid native, that just shows how dumb you are and how smart I am."
I "love" how they refer to that idiot's research team as part of the group that discovered the bat.

I know! And this suggests the possibility of even more unknown sources of cute just waiting to be squealed over!

No eating the cute bat.

There have been so many new creatures discovered in the last couple of years, but I think he must be the cutest. ^_^
